Today, I tried a new spot for playing fetch with my dog Salem. It left a lot to be desired and I ended up going on a rant that further criticized city life. My only appeal to coming to a place like this was the accessibility. I realize now, however, that too much accessibility leaves people wanting privacy or a bit of space even. When I left my home town, there were talks of suburban sidewalk installation. I am wondering how that has developed over the years. I remember walking long back roads in order to get to places like Walmart. This was a bit sketchy and every time a car would come, we would have to sort of step onto the shoulder to let them pass. That would have us wishing for the day we could move to Philly or New York or some other city where everything was in “walking distance”. Then came the corona virus pandemic and that left us more concerned about being within “Spitting distance” of each other. Looking back, it seems like there is another option for those who like taking long walks but would like to do so safely. On my journey today, I imaged a suburb were soft trails exist and foot traffic is encouraged yet not exploited. These paths would lead from all of the neighborhoods to town centers and markets. This would encourage folks to be outside more. Young people especially would like this because it is a way to meet up with friends and go on an adventure before you have a license to drive. Mall walking could potentially be replaced with this as well. Bicyclist in the area have a similar problem as there are no biking lanes where I am from. I would imagine this could be quite costly and so that may have been the reason for the hold up. Either way as my lease for this urban apartment is coming to an end, I look forward to moving outside of city limits and back towards a more peaceful way of life. I would love to know which sort of place you live in, how you like it, and where you plan to go next. Share with me if you want and either way see you next time! enjoy! -Jai’Kir
